Cooke’s SP3 lenses are a stunning set of extremely lightweight and portable lenses that still offer a very compelling and impactful render. In either native E or RF Mounts, easy coverage of large formats, proper gearings and mechanics to allow standard accessories, they hit all the boxes to create a wonderful A set for a nimble production, or a fast and easy B-set for something like Panchros.
Optically, they don’t slouch in look, either. With enough field curvature to get a delicate center frame with good falloff, the same classic extremely soft focus rolloff Cooke has been known to have for years, a pleasant flaring more reminiscent of something like an S4. and the warm cast that’s become so familiar over the years, they ride a line of being able to match a few different sets of Cooke lenses pretty effectively.
They open to a common T/2.4, allowing for decently shallow depth at an impressively small size. Wide open they bloom out much more like a panchro, with soft and intense spherical aberration and field curvature that gets more intense towards the edges and a soft lazy low-con look, and by a T/2.8-T/4 split they’ve cleaned up significantly and can aid something like a mini S4 quite handily and convincingly as well with a much cleaner, higher contrast image and the same gentle focus rolloff.
