Our Canon V35 lens set is a breathtaking and immersive full 6-set of Full-Format covering PL-Mount lenses modified to render images much like a classic K35 prime.
While optical designs certainly change over the years, brands often prioritize some of the same looks and styles with their lenses, and Canon is no exception. At the end of the day, the optical designs of K35’s aren’t night and day from the contemporary but accessible CN-E Primes. With the careful work of the folks over at The Keep, Northwest Camera, and Duclos, we’ve had the lenses retuned and modified to render much more closely to the legendary classic while still keeping the benefits of the contemporary housings and mechanics in in some ways perhaps being a bit more flexible than the OG’s.
Optically, the focus rolloff that K35’s are known for are one of their most important traits, and this whole V35 set has been retuned to be much softer and -extremely- similar. Bokeh render, contrast, and edge falloff (especially in the spherical aberration and field curvature fronts) are much more in line, and contrast and flaring have a nudge towards the classics as well.
While K35’s really only show their most sought-after characteristics wide open before they start to clean up and become a much more tame and nondescript look, the V35’s still exhibit the look out to around a T/2.8-T/4 split, allowing for much more flexibility of depth while you’re shooting without getting rid of the characteristics of the optics themselves. Once stopped down to around a T/4, most of the effects become a bit more subtle.
