Atlas’ Mercury Primes are by all accounts a new landmark in anamorphics. A middling 1.5x squeeze allows use on many formats without excessive crop without sacrificing the character you’d expect any serious set of primes to have, while the weight and size of the lenses let you stay as nimble as you need to through the whole production.Optically there’s a generous amount of edge falloff, with strong presence of the typical anamorphic breathing that’s reminiscent of some of our favorite anamorphics over the years. Eschewing traditional streaks instead for a gorgeous amber wash of flare, the lenses have a refreshing warmth, a slightly lower contrast than something like a Cooke, and intense barrel distortion in a stunning way. They cover full format, and have a solid PL mount with common 95mm fronts and gear placements to make set efficient, and incredible close focus performance lessens the likelihood of needing to deal with the matteboxes and diopters most anamorphic shooters know all too well.
